Judge Carr Wins Major
Police Endorsements in
Race for Santa Clara County District Attorney
Rank-and-file police officers lined up solidly behind Superior
Court Judge Dolores Carr in the first major test of support
for the four candidates running for Santa Clara County District
Attorney.
Judge Carr received the endorsements of two of Santa
Clara County's law-enforcement organizations late last week.
Both
the San Jose Police Officers Association (POA) and the Police
Benevolent Association (PBA) voted their support for the
judge.
The POA consists of l800 police officers and is one of
the largest labor unions in the county. The Police Benevolent
Association with about 400 members is comprised of mostly
retired police
officers.
There are four candidates in the race to replace
retiring DA George Kennedy. The ballots for the POA endorsement
were opened
and counted on Friday night. Judge Carr received 71%.
Assistant DA Mark Buller scored second with 12%. Deputy DA
Jim Shore
received 9%. Chief Assistant Karyn Sinunu came in fourth
with 8%.
Judge Carr served as an Deputy District Attorney
for fifteen years Before her election to the Superior Court
five years
ago. She said that she was "deeply honored by
the support of the men and women who are the first
responders
against crimes
in Santa Clara County. They are, of course, the DA's
most valuable partner in an effective and smooth running
criminal justice
system," said Carr.
The PBA also held their endorsement
meeting last week. Bob Moir, the Sgt. of Arms and MC
for the meeting said, "We
heard presentations from all of them, asked tough questions
and had a lively discussion among our members. Although
all four candidates had supporters in our group, Judge
Carr won
our endorsement with an overwhelming majority."
In
addition to making endorsements on police related issues
the PBA also sponsors community organizations
such as the,
The Special Olympics, "Cops that Care" which
provides support to families and children at the Stanford
Hospital.
They also sponsor the Police Chaplaincy Program, which
provides a 24-hour a day chaplain that performs weddings,
funerals
and responds in crisis situations.
